Kampung Monyet, the Masked Monkey Slum of Jakarta

331918 v2

Generally my threshold for ‘creepy place’ is pretty high (I’m the kind of guy who would choose a trip to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone over an Atlantis Cruise), so you know when something freaks me out it’s pretty bad:

Between 2009 and 2013, numerous little monkeys dressed in baby clothes and masks with doll heads haunted the streets of Jakarta. Dressed up, chained and held captive by a begging trainer, these monkeys would dance and perform tricks in street corners and at the crossroads of the city centre. [link]

This comes via Cracked (of course), who add, in response to the question “why?”: “To beg for money on the streets, but no one would have blamed you if you’d answered ‘for the glory of Satan.'”
